Fresh calls have been made by the Garda Representative Association for all frontline Garda officers to be armed with tasers whilst on duty.
It is believed the latest call which is one of many being made by the association that will officers greater protection comes after a Garda was awarded €1.6m in damages after he sustained a serious injury whilst in the line of duty.
The GRA who have previously called for greater measures for Garda officers say all frontline personnel should be armed with tasers as those protecting the public are sometimes put in dangerous and difficult situations.
In a statement via Twitter, they GRA said: “Gda Aidan Flanagan today received €1.16m for an injury received at work – he was attacked while effecting an arrest. Every day, frontline members put their physical and mental health on the line for all our protection. Let us now protect them. Arm all with tasers.”
