Half of Americans believe U.S. President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden received preferential treatment from prosecutors who reached a deal that would have allowed the younger Biden to plead guilty to tax charges but avoid gun-related convictions, a Reuters/Ipsos poll finds, reports Breaking News.

A two-day poll that ended Wednesday found that Americans were divided along party lines in their views on the issue, with 75 percent of Republicans seeing preferential treatment compared to just 33 percent of Democrats.

Most respondents said the case would not affect their chances of voting for the older Biden next year when he is seeking re-election.

U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the federal prosecutor appointed by former Republican President Donald Trump, said Tuesday that Hunter Biden, 53, has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of willful non-payment of income taxes and has entered into a deal to avoid pleading guilty to a gun-related charge.

Mr Trump and his Republican allies claimed the settlement was for special treatment for Mr Biden’s son. Mr. Weiss was one of several Trump-appointed prosecutors whom Biden asked to serve as president after taking office in January 2021, reports Breaking News.

The younger Biden has worked as a lobbyist, lawyer, consultant to foreign companies, investment banker and artist, and has publicly detailed his struggles with substance abuse.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey surveyed 1,004 American adults nationwide and has a confidence interval, a measure of accuracy, of about 4 percentage points, reports Breaking News.
