Following the withdrawal of President Joe Biden, 81, from the presidential campaign and his endorsement of US Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, Harris made her first public appearance since entering the contest, reports RTE.
Ms. Harris declared, “Joe Biden’s legacy over the last three years is unmatched in modern history,” prior to speaking at a White House ceremony honouring collegiate athletes.
“Everyday, our president, Joe Biden, fights for the American people and we are deeply, deeply grateful for his service to our nation,” she continued.
Following Mr. Biden’s announcement yesterday that he was stepping down due to mounting pressure from fellow Democrats, Ms. Harris did not expressly mention her new position as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination for president, reports RTE.
She announced on X that she will be stopping at the Harris campaign headquarters this afternoon, which is located in Delaware and was once the Biden campaign headquarters.
She said that Mr. Biden was feeling better after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.
Following Mr. Biden’s statement, Ms. Harris moved quickly to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, reports RTE.
Nearly every well-known Democrat who was thought to be Ms. Harris’s opponent has thrown their support behind her, including Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Hundreds of calls have already been placed on her behalf by campaign staff and supporters, pleading with Democratic Party convention delegates to support her candidature for president in the November 5 election against Republican Donald Trump.
A shooter almost killed former President Trump during a campaign appearance ten days before he selected fellow hardliner US Senator JD Vance as his running mate. Mr. Biden’s withdrawal was the most recent shock to the White House contest, reports RTE.
