Health Committee warned that the new National Children’s Hospital could cost double due to inflation

The cost of the new National Children’s Hospital could rise even further due to inflation the Government has been warned.

Speaking before an Oireachtas Committee on Health, thd Chair of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, Fred Barry, said the overall cost of the project which is scheduled to be completed by 2023 could end up being double than previously estimated due to inflation costs.

Mr Barry who revealed that there has been no overspend since the Government’s revised budget at the end of last year, has warned that the overall cost of the project could end up at €2bn.

The findings come after the project was steeped in controversy last year due to a large overspend which saw figures surpass €1bn.

However speaking to the committee, Barry said that further costs could occur despite there being no overspend to date.
