Many people on social media have been voicing their support for a teacher who refuses to address on of his students with the pronoun “they”.

A secondary school has won a High Court injunction preventing a teacher who objects to a student being addressed by the pronoun they from coming to campus or teaching at the school while away from his post.

RTE reports that the injunction was obtained by the trustees of Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath against Enoch Burke, who was told by the court that he was currently on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing disciplinary proceedings.

He was not sanctioned and the school did not find anything against him.

His suspension stems from alleged conduct after he publicly objected to the school’s request that any of its students wishing to advance be called by the pronoun “they” and a different name.

Burke remains in Mountjoy until at least tomorrow to see what the Judge says then.
