The Department of Justice has confirmed it is no longer planning to use a hotel in Conamara to accommodate international protection applicants, reports RTE.
Earlier this year, a protest was held outside the Carna Bay Hotel after news emerged that the property had been proposed to the State as a potential IPAS centre.
The continuous demonstration ended when the assessment process was paused to evaluate whether the hotel could still function effectively as accommodation for regular visitors to the region, reports RTE.
Protesters claimed the hotel played a key role in the local economy and expressed dissatisfaction with the level of communication from the Department of Integration.
In a statement, the department explained that the decision to drop the Carna Hotel proposal was influenced by factors such as the availability of local services and “the current level of need in the sector”, reports RTE.
