Iarnrod Eireann contemplating deploying ‘body cams’ to combat violence on trains

The Liberal has learned that Ianroid Eireann, the Irish rail service are contemplating deploying body cameras to their staff in an effort to counteract violence on trains.

It’s understood that a mass brawl broke out quite recently on a train between gangs on the Clongriffen and Malahide train and made management take notice.

An Irish Rail staff member told The Liberal:
“It’s an effort to stop violence on the trains. There’s gangs of young people travelling together in large numbers. They’re generally aged around 15 to 20.”

“They don’t really do anything to staff except try and skip fares from time to time. But the problem is that there have been a number of fights on trains and we can do little to nothing to intervene.”

“By the time gardai arrive, it’s either over or they’ve gotten off at other stops etc. I’ve been told that management are now seriously considering deploying body cams for staff to wear, including ticket seller and drivers. It’s worth trying it as a deterrent.”
