Remember, remember, the first of November.

Such words will resonate in Enda Kenny’s mind for some time to come. On this day of the year 2014, over 130,000 souls took to the country’s streets to raise their collective voice against the water charges. Today’s protests ranked among the largest in living memory.

And yet, Mr. Kenny retorts in defiant tones.

Speaking today before the plentiful surroundings of a presidential dinner, the Taoiseach said that ‘the Government would be forced to undo the tax cuts brought into the last Budget if the water charges were to be scrapped.’

He also let it be known that the Government would cut tax next year also, and the year after that, if his party were to be reelected.

He added ‘I am not prepared to increase income tax by 4pc on the top rate, and do away with the tax package in the last Budget.’

When asked about the massive demonstrations happening all over the country today, the Taoiseach said that people had ‘legitimate concerns’ about the creation of Irish Water.

In creating this company, the Government has created a monster that will certainly bring them down at the polls at the next election, if not sooner.
