Indonesia are probing whether pilots are falling asleep mid-flight

After discovering that two of the airline’s pilots had slept off during a recent flight, Indonesia’s transport ministry said that it will launch an investigation into Batik Air, a local carrier, reports RTE.

During a flight on 25 January from South East Sulawesi to the capital Jakarta, a captain and co-pilot fell asleep at the same time for around 28 minutes, according to a preliminary assessment by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).

During the two hours and thirty-five-minute flight, none of the 153 people on board the Airbus A320, including the four flight attendants, were hurt. The event led to a series of navigational blunders, reports RTE.

Air Transport Director-General M Kristi Endah Murni said that the transport ministry “strongly reprimands” Batik Air for the event and urged airlines to be more mindful of their air crew’s rest time.

“We will carry out an investigation and review of the night flight operation in Indonesia related with Fatigue Risk Management for Batik Air and all flight operators,” Ms Kristi said in a statement, reports RTE.
