According to the local prosecutor, an armed man who attacked police with a knife and set fire to a synagogue in the northwest city of Rouen was shot and killed by French police, reports RTE.

The mayor of Rouen, Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, stated that the Normandy town was “battered and shocked” and that although the synagogue sustained significant damage, no one else was hurt.

“An armed man somehow climbed up the synagogue and threw an object, a sort of Molotov cocktail, into the main praying room,” he told reporters, reports RTE.

Gerald Darmanin, the interior minister, stated that “national police in Rouen neutralised early this morning an armed individual who clearly wanted to set fire to the city’s synagogue” on X, the previous Twitter platform.

Like many other European nations, France has witnessed a rise in anti-Semitic incidents following the Israeli military’s reaction in Gaza following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, reports RTE.
