A man died after falling from a bridge into the River Thames while being arrested, police said.

A patrol car was brought to a stop where a man and woman were involved in a “verbal altercation” on Kingston Bridge, in south-west London, at 10:30pm on Friday night.

After a robbery charge, officers began arresting the man, but he ended up into the water.

Police said the man, who is believed to be in his 20s but has not been publicly named, was not handcuffed at the time.

Firefighters, the RNLI, the Metropolitan Police Marine Unit and a helicopter were called in to help rescue the man and his body was pulled from the water some two hours later.

Paramedics attempted to revive him but he was pronounced dead. His family has been informed.

There is still a cordon on the Kingston Bridge and the investigation is ongoing.
