There’s a major investigation underway by the Department of Employment and Social Protection have confirmed that it is to set up a practice that will actively target social welfare fraud.
It’s understood that they’re examining some 750,000 individual social welfare claims which they say could be costing the exchequer some €95 million in overpaid social welfare payments.
According to RTÉ News, the new Compliance and Anti-Fraud Strategy 2019-2023, will also look to tackle employers who falsely claim that workers are self-employed.
Under the new system, the Department will introduce regular inspections as well as stricter penalties to those who are found guilty of fraud.
It is estimated that a total of €20 billion is spent on social welfare payments each year.
