Irish consumers will spend a whopping €329 million on Black Friday

Irish shoppers anticipate spending €329 each during the forthcoming Cyber Monday and Black Friday weekends, reports RTE.

That exceeds the anticipated spending of every other European nation that PwC polled for its Black Friday study.

Here, a sixth of shoppers stated they would spend at least €500.

Almost two-thirds of shoppers stated that they will probably look for deals at that time and buy at least one item.

More than one-third stated that they would spend more than they did the previous year, with the expectation of finding excellent deals and rising costs being two contributing causes, reports RTE.

According to a poll of 2,000 Irish consumers, nearly half want to spend the same amount of money, and 18% would spend less.

Some people will cut back on their purchases because they are frugal, have fewer possessions, and think they won’t obtain a good bargain, reports RTE.

During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, 77% of shoppers stated that it is crucial that they be able to purchase both online and in physical stores.

More over half stated that they would have the things delivered to their homes, although 37% of purchases are still made in-store.

“While consumers are more likely to purchase online over the Black Friday weekend, the importance of an omnichannel approach remains, with a significant number of consumers still preferring in-store shopping,” said Owen McFeely, Director, PwC Ireland Retail & Consumer Practice, reports RTE.

“These in-store shoppers create a real opportunity for retailers to deliver excellent in-store service, build trust and deepen their relationships with these shoppers,” he added, reports RTE.

Irish shoppers typically adopt a specific strategy during Black Friday.

More than one-third stated they make impulsive purchases, while more than half stated they had a product or a list of things they intended to or were interested in purchasing last year.

With 41% of shoppers focussing their Black Friday purchases on electronics, this category is the most popular. Clothing, accessories, and shoes, as well as health and beauty, are next in line, reports RTE.

During Black Friday and Cyber Monday, 38% of shoppers say they will only purchase necessities, and 28% attempt to avoid making impulsive purchases, indicating that sustainability is also becoming more significant.

Nearly one out of five stated that they would stay away from “fast fashion,” reports RTE.
