An American citizen and former Taliban militant who has been in prison since 2002 when he was captured by US forces in Afghanistan is set to take up residence in Ireland upon his release in May.

John Walker Lindh was captured just months after 9/11 fighting against American forces who had invaded Afghanistan to destroy the Taliban regime and the root out Al-Qaeda.

The man who is also known as Sulayman al-Faris and Abu Sulayman al-Irlandi managed to obtain Irish citizenship in 2003 from prison by virtue of his Irish grandmother.

Lindh’s imminent release has raised grave concerns among security services in the US and Europe as he has refused to renounce his radical Islamist views.

However, the unrepentant Jihadi’s plans to take up residence in Ireland does not seem to cause much concern for the Irish government.

“Irish citizens are not subject to immigration control,” “Therefore, if a person has Irish citizenship and presents their Irish passport on arrival, they will not be refused entry to the state.” a spokesman for Ireland’s Department of Justice has said.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s government has shown a profound and unprecedented lack of concern regarding Irish passport holders who were members of radical Muslim terrorist organisations taking up residence in Ireland.

The government announced last month that Irish citizens who were part of the Islamic State will be allowed to return and will likely not face any kind of repercussions for being members of the genocidal terror group or for their treason.
