Irish holidaymakers travelling to France by car must purchase a special windscreen sticker in advance if they want to avoid hefty fines.

The sticker, known as the Crit’Air vignette, is placed on the vehicle to determine the vehicle’s emission levels and in some cases to restrict access to certain areas to improve air quality in certain areas, reports The Mirror.

The list of French cities where stickers were mandatory now includes Bordeaux and Clermont-Ferrand.

If you want to buy a sticker, you need to do it on the official website.

The sticker costs €4.61 (including postage) and your vehicle must meet the Euro emission standards related to your vehicle and emission type.

As of July 2023, there are currently 14 French low-emission zones where a sticker must be placed on the windscreen:

  • Aix-Marseille-Provence region
  • Bordeaux
  • Clermont-Ferrand
  • Grenoble
  • Lille
  • Lyon
  • Marseille
  • Montpellier
  • Nice
  • Paris (has the strictest rules)
  • Reims
  • Rouen
  • Strasbourg
  • Toulouse

Drivers who fail to affix the appropriate sticker to their vehicle face a €68 fine, rising to €180 if not paid within 45 days, reports The Mirror.
