Dublin man, John Fitzgibbon, contacted The Liberal to say that he isn’t happy with the proposed Presidential candidates of Heather Humphreys and Catherine Connolly.
John told The Liberal:
“I’m in my 80s. I intend to take my voting paper away with me as evidence that politicians have prevented candidates I would have given a preference vote to from standing.”
“TDs Councillors etc violated the constitution in refusing to allow worthy candidates to stand. Their function, constitutionally, is strictly to enable worthy candidates to stand, not to conspire to prevent them from standing as was done. The Parties have made this a politically appointed role rather than an independent citizen chosen one.”
“The whole process is grossly unconstitutional and should be stopped. It would be if successive governments hadn’t declined to give low income citizens appropriate aid to challenge bona fide cases of violations of the constitution etc. The wealthy, criminals, the corporate world, family law supported cases etc can afford, or, get legal aid from the State!”
John continued:
“A key element of the presidents role is to prevent unconstitutional changes being passed. An inevitable corollary of that is to stop violations of extant legislation. The Attorney General, as an independent advisor to Government, should, likewise, attempt to block such corruption, and if overruled make the basis of his/her decision know to the people and President.”
“Resignation, in protest, might be their final option to highlight the corruption of the constitution.”
So tell us what you think? Is John correct in his thinking – tell us your thoughts.
