An overwhelming majority of Aontu party members have passed a motion of No confidence in RTE News and RTE Current Affairs programming.

At their recent Aontu Ard Fheis, the following motion was submitted to the membership.

“This Ard Fheis conveys a vote of no confidence in RTE and recommends that the Irish Government immediately legislates to ensure that RTE present News and Current Affairs Programmes impartially and without bias.”

The RTE No Confidence motion was passed by 92% of Aontú delegates.

In 2020, Aontú withdrew a bid to seek an injunction against RTE due to time constraints. Aontú party leader, Peadar Tóibin was excluded from an RTE political debate. He said Aontú believes “all the political parties should have an opportunity to stand in the studio tonight and set forth policies and party objectives.” RTE excluded Mr Tóibin but included seven other party leaders in their RTE debate.

This is not the first time that a political party has claimed RTE is biased. In 2012, Fine Gael’s Mr Varadkar told The Irish Times that “bias was most obvious in the station’s (RTE) coverage of American politics.”

“I do not carry any candle for the Republican Party and will not be supporting them. But with RTÉ, this is when it is most obvious. Republicans are bad and Democrats are good. he said.

“It is also there in its domestic coverage. There is a bias towards centre-left parties and liberal views.”
