According to reports circulating this morning it is understood Irish Water may be set to have capped rates for the best part of a decade. The new ruling may be enforced because of the latest findings from Eurostat.

It is not yet known what the set rate would be as the Government have not yet ruled other options. The news comes after a recent announcement by the state that they are currently looking at the possibility of linking payment of Irish Water bills to the €100 conservation grant.

According to a report published in the Irish Times by leading political correspondent Fiach Kelly, it is believed that the latest ruling by Eurostat to keep Irish Water off the books would allow the Government to a longer rolling-out period.

Mr Kelly said “The move comes after the Eurostat ruling that Irish Water should remain off balance sheet. That means that the Government has been able to re-cast the semi-state as a longer-term plan that will take 10 years to roll out,” “And they’re also considering leaving the existing water charges cap in place for at least a decade.”

Mr Kelly added: “Your water charges will never be more than €160 for a family, and more than €60 for a single person, when the €100 grant is taken into account.”
