Irish Water remains as the Government easily defeats the opposition’s motion to scrap water charges immediately

There was some bad news announced for those who oppose Irish Water last night as it was confirmed that the Fine Gael led minority    Government have been successful in defeating Sinn Féin proposed motion to completely scrap the much hates charges immediately.

It is understood the motion which was presented by Sinn Fein and a number of opposition TD’s was easily defeated due to the fact Fianna Fáil decided to abstain from the vote.

The motion which called for the complete abolishment of the charges with immediate effect never really stood chance as the opposition needed the support of Mr Martin and his Fianna Fail colleagues and was subsequently defeated 59 votes to 38.

Fianna Fail’s decision to abstain from the vote comes after they refused to backtrack on their agreement which saw them suspend the charges for 9 months in return for Fine Gael led minority Government.

The future of the heavily criticised charges still remains unclear and the debate over whether or not the charges should be abolished will continue in the coming months ahead.
