Joan Burton desperately clinging by her fingernails to party leadership

The acting Tanaiste defended her leadership over an acrimonious and grueling six-hour long meeting yesterday, amidst widespread calls for her resignation.

Alan Kelly also felt the heat during the meeting, with one unnamed TD stating that that there “wasn’t much warmth or love in the room” for either him or Burton.

The Labour party suffered a disastrous defeat at the recent election, and have been left with just seven seats in the Dáil. The party has so far ruled out entering into any formation of government.

While Joan Burton fights for her place at the top, Brendan Howlin has been tipped to replace her at the party’s driving seat. Internal sources said that there was a sense of ‘inevitability’ about Ms. Burton’s ousting by Mr. Howlin.
