Legal notices get issued to 13 ‘dodgy box’ operators around Ireland

A crackdown on illicit streaming services has resulted in the issuance of legal notifications to thirteen “dodgy box” operators in Ireland, reports Breaking News.

The measures against IPTV operators were made public by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact).

Over the course of two weeks in December, an operation was conducted that led to the shutdown of illicit services, affecting thousands of “end-users” and unlawful streams, reports Breaking News.

Thirteen illegal IPTV providers in Ireland received legal notifications telling them to cease their unlawful streaming activities right once “or else risk facing the consequences, including criminal prosecution.”

Dublin, Cork, Donegal, Offaly, Limerick, Louth, Clare, Westmeath, and Laois were among the locations where the 13 legal notifications were issued. According to Fact, they were delivered in person, by mail, and via email, and the results were positive, reports Breaking News.

As a result, social media profiles have been removed, services have been shut down, memberships have been cancelled, and settlements have been paid.

The fact that pirate networks are frequently associated with organised crime and that their earnings may be used to finance other illicit operations is not well known to most consumers, reports Breaking News.

Separately, Fact cautioned that unlawful streaming pose a significant danger of exposing users to many negative outcomes, such as malware and virus infection on their devices, fraud, or theft of personal information.

Fact backs the BeStreamWise consumer campaign, which was created to educate the public about these dangers and point them in the direction of safe ways to view the content they want, reports Breaking News.

Nearly 70 illicit services have been shut down nationwide as a result of this, the fourth wave of enforcement action since March 2023. Fact and its partners are committed to “eliminate illegal streaming in the country and protect consumers” as part of their continuous efforts.

Kieron Sharp, Chairman of Fact, said: “Together with our partners we will continue to identify and take action against Illegal IPTV service providers. They are breaking the law, making criminal profits and putting consumers at real risk of malware, data loss and identity theft. We want to protect consumers from these risks and operations such as this ensure the message goes out. It is not scaremongering; these are real criminal actions which consumers and their families are exposed to. These investigations and operations will continue this new year,” reports Breaking News.
