Man refused entry to SuperValu for not wearing face mask awarded €1,500 compensation

A man who was refused entry to a Wicklow supermarket for not wearing a mask and whose wife was allowed to enter the store without a face covering has been awarded €1,500 compensation, reports The Mirror.

The Workplace Relations Commission found that Daly’s Supervalu supermarket in Greystones, Co. Wicklow discriminated against customer Sebastian Caluger on the basis of gender.

However, the WRC ruled that Mr Caluga did not experience separate discrimination at the supermarket on the basis of disability, which is contrary to the Equal Status Act, reports The Mirror.

No representative from Klubert Trading, owner of Supervalu supermarket in Greystones, attended the WRC hearing.

Caluga claims he experienced discrimination on August 13, 2021, when a store manager told him he could not be in a supermarket without wearing a mask.

The complainant said she told the manager she was fired because of stress and anxiety caused by wearing a mask, reports The Mirror.
