Martin grovels to stay relevant on the world stage as he offers his “heartfelt sympathies” on the passing of Pope Francis

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin has expressed profound sorrow following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away this morning, Easter Monday, at the age of 88 in Vatican City. In a statement released shortly after the Vatican’s announcement, Martin hailed the pontiff as “an exceptional leader” whose legacy would endure through his compassion and advocacy for the marginalised.

“It is with profound sadness that the world has learned of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” Martin said. “His long and distinguished papacy was marked by an unwavering commitment to the principles of compassion, peace, and human dignity. He spoke out for the poor, the marginalised, and the oppressed. His solidarity with refugees, his calls for climate action, and his insistence on global peace and equality set him apart as a champion of justice in the modern world.”

Martin also reflected on the Pope’s special connection with Ireland, noting his 2018 visit for the World Meeting of Families, where he was “welcomed with warmth and enthusiasm that spoke volumes about the respect and affection in which he was held by Irish people.” The Taoiseach extended his “heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences” to the global Catholic community on behalf of the Irish government and its people.

Pope Francis’ death, confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell at 7:35 AM CEST, comes just a day after his final public appearance in St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican has entered a period of mourning as preparations begin for the conclave to elect his successor.
