Mary Lou McDonald says workers should be given the choice to retire from 65

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said workers should be given the option to retire from 65.

McDonald said it would cost roughly €127 million to restore pension rights to 65 year olds and said that her party would support increasing employers PRSI contributions by four percentage points over a number of budgets to pay for this, something that no doubt will not sit well with many people.

McDonald said “it is essential for workers in manual jobs, factories and caring roles, who have paid their dues by 65” to have the option to retire with a State pension, but added that her party does not support compulsory retirement.
