The government has agreed to a more targeted living expenses package, as well as some universal payments, with €470 million earmarked for social protection measures.
It came after a meeting last night between the coalition leaders and the ministers of finance, public spending and social protection.
The plan was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday morning. The measures include a lump sum payment of 100 euros child benefit per child in June and a one-time surcharge of 100 euros for back-to-school help for clothing and footwear in July.
In April, a second complement of €200 will be paid to the beneficiaries of the Working Family Payment, single parents, low-income families, recipients of disability and retirees.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has also confirmed that there will be no additional €200 electricity in May and this will be checked at the next home.
Varadkar has been acused of giving next to nothing to “middle income earners”.
