A recent broadcast by RTÉ News described Matteo Salvini, an Italian politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of the Interior from 1 June 2018 to 5 September 2019 as a “far-right Leader” during their “news” coverage of Mr Salvini’s trial regarding an alleged blocking of illegal migrants from entering his country by sea.

RTÉ also went on to state on their website “Mr Salvini, the leader of the far-right League party who is known for an “Italians first” policy, is charged with kidnapping and abuse of office for using his position as interior minister to detain the 147 migrants at sea in August 2019.”
Mr Salvini, in response to the allegations said “”You tell me how serious a trial is where Richard Gere will come from Hollywood to testify about my nastiness.”

Questions need to be asked of RTÉ News as to their bias in branding a former democratically elected politician as “far-right”. RTÉ receives in excess od €179 MILLION of Irish taxpayers money EVERY YEAR, and as taxpayers we deserve unbiased reporting. If this is not possible, defunding RTÉ should be on the table.
