More travel chaos looms as Union members at Iarnrod Eireann discuss the possibility of industrial action in the hope to force through pay increase demands

Thousands of commuters across the country could son face further travel disruption as talk of industrial action at Iarnrod Eireann has already begun to surface.

The latest bout of industrial action which is set to affect commuters nationwide before the autumn comes as Union members at the state operated company have called for a 3.75% increase which would put them on a level wage structure similar to those working at Dublin Bus.

However the call for a pay increase could follow the same path as calls at Bus Eireann recently and end up being disputed in the Labour Recommendations Court after Iarnrod Eireann announced this week the company could soon face insolvency.

According to chiefs at the Rail operator the company posted a loss of €159m and have only come out ahead by €2m in the past calendar year.

The talk of industrial action will come at a further cost to the state as commuters across the country will be left without reliable transportation especially if Union chiefs at Bus Eireann agree to back the strike and hold stoppages of their own in the same way Iarnrod Eireann held a number of stoppages earlier this year to support those undertaking action at Bus Eireann.
