A new, violent eruption at the main crater on the summit of Mount Kilauea in Hawaii has sent a gigantic plume of smoke and ash 30,000ft high, according to observers.

The latest eruption took place early Thursday, local time.

Volcanic activity in the area began on May 3. Rivers of lava have been flowing around the areas surrounding the volcano, destroying a number of houses.

Up to 2,000 people have so far been displaced.
