Now that BREXIT is in place, there has been a ramping up of media and political activity around the possible re-unification of Ireland and the re-joining of Northern Ireland to the European Union.

The Irish Times even ran a piece by Newton Emerson on the possibility of replacing the Irish Tricolour should Northern Ireland re-join the Republic.

This week, Sinn Fein took another step in their Irish and EU re-unification plans.

One of Sinn Féin’s elected politicians, Martina Anderson who has represented the party as an MLA, junior minister and MEP since 2007 had announced she would not contest the Assembly elections last May.

According to the BBC, in a statement this week, Sinn Fein leader, Mary Lou McDonald announced that Ms Anderson will now take up role within the party to promote “the case for Irish unity” in Europe.

Last May, the BBC reported that the family of Foyle assembly member Martina Anderson had been “humiliated” by Sinn Féin after being asked to quit her role.

In a Facebook post, Ms Anderson’s sister, Sharon Burke, said the family believe she has been “sacrificed” by Sinn Fein.

Ms Burke continued;

The party (Sinn Fein) “came into Derry to fix problems and left creating more.”
