OPINION: Fear, despair and loneliness will kill more than Covid as government inexplicably targets gatherings in Orwellian restrictions

“We have nothing to fear, but fear itself” declared US President Franklyn D. Roosevelt at his inaugural address in 1933, but now our governments and media seem intend in stoking as much fear as is possible amongst the public so they can implement an Orwellian control system.

Ireland is famous for the friendly and outgoing demeanour of its people but in just a few short months this has all changed, as you pass by people on the street one would be forgiven for thinking that smiling, nodding and saying a quick hello are all gestures that can spread Covid-19.

The elderly especially have been the primary victims of this irrational fear mongering, where once there was a jovial smile while passing a neighbour in public there is a mask and a suspicious glance as if the virus is transmitted by eye contact itself.

We have already seen the numbers of suicides jump since the Covid-19 lockdown, across the world and this tragic phenomenon is set to increase further, along with deaths of despair from loneliness and other mental health issues sure to rise as restrictions tighten the economy takes another hit.

These deaths will dwarf in number those who actually died from Covid-19 itself.

The government’s recent Draconian measures come after 10,587 people were tested for the coronavirus over the past weekend, with only 66 being confirmed as positive. The government has not said how many were traced to pubs or public gatherings, yet these are their targets for restriction.

A curious move indeed and one would be forgiven for contemplating the possibility that the government is opposed to public gatherings and the free flowing of ideas that they entail as even the most ardent of dullards is beginning to question just what exactly is really going on.
