President Michael D Higgins has this afternoon signed new laws that specify that cigarettes will need to be sold in plain packaging.
The effective date for this new legislation will be decided by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar.
Tobacco companies put forward arguments saying that these laws will make it impossible for them to exercise their right to use trademarks on the packets, and did indeed threaten legal action if the Government did go ahead with the implementation of these laws.
