“Before the unthinkable happens,” Taoiseach Simon Harris has recommended that warning indications about the misuse of public people and politicians be taken seriously, reports RTE.
According to the head of Fine Gael, politics has grown more perilous and polarising for elected officials on both sides.
The Taoiseach stated that politicians’ houses have been targeted by “angry mobs” and that they are scared for their safety and the safety of their families. He made these comments today at an event in Monaghan.
“We know how this story ends. We have had too many warnings and we need to take them seriously before the unthinkable happens,” Mr Harris said, reports RTE.
With today’s ceremony, Fine Gael Senator Billy Fox—the only member of the Oireachtas to be slain during the Troubles—marked 50 years since his passing.
“We cannot be complacent,” Mr. Harris stated, even if “none since have been shot down in cold blood,” reports RTE.
