Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, was elected the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on May 10, 2025, marking a historic moment as the first American pope, according to RTÉ. The announcement, heralded by white smoke from the Sistine Chapel, prompted an outpouring of congratulations from world leaders, reflecting hope for his leadership of the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.

Pope Leo XIV, addressing the cheering crowds in St. Peter’s Square, called for unity, saying, “We can all walk together towards that homeland God has prepared for us,” as reported by RTÉ. His message of peace resonated globally, with leaders swift to offer their support.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed enthusiasm on Truth Social, writing, “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wished for a pontificate that would “contribute to strengthening dialogue and the defence of human rights,” according to RTÉ. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz congratulated Pope Leo XIV, noting he gives “hope and guidance to millions of believers,” reports RTÉ.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen praised the election, stating, “We sincerely congratulate His Holiness Leo XIV on his election as Pope and head of the Catholic Church,” wishing for a pontificate “guided by wisdom and strength”. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov expressed confidence in Pope Leo XIV’s ability to foster peace, saying, “May he work with wisdom and dedication for a more peaceful world and dialogue among all”.

Pope Leo XIV, known for his missionary work in Peru and leadership in the Vatican’s Dicastery for Bishops, is seen as a bridge-builder. His election, celebrated by 150,000 gathered in St. Peter’s Square, signals a new chapter for the Church, with global leaders united in optimism for his vision of compassion and unity, as reported by RTÉ.
