Portuguese authorities confirm that at least 29 people have been killed following a bus crash in Madeira

Authorities in Portugal have confirmed that at least 29 people have been killed following a bus crash in Madeira, on Wednesday.

According to The Regional Service of Civil Protection, at 29 have been killed whilst a further 28 people have been injured following the crash near the Quinta Splendida Hotel in Cancio.

It is understood that the bus crashed into a house on the island at approximately 6:30pm local time on Wednesday evening.

Authorities investigating the incident say the bus driver who was also injured in the incident has has been transferred along with the other injured parties to the Central Hospital of Funchal.

Although it is not yet known what nationalities were on the bus at the time of the incident, reports in Portugal say it is believed that the majority of the passengers were German nationals.

Meanwhile the Civil Protection service has said that they are currently trying to determine the cause of the crash and an investigation is currently ongoing.

They also added that consular assistance has been provided to those affected by the tragedy.
