Russian President Vladimir Putin is pushing for a revision of the country’s constitution that would enshrine the definition of marriage as between a man as well as a number of other amendments.
President Putin has proposed several constitutional amendments, some of which are seen his critics as a means to extend his presidential tenure beyond its current timeframe which ends in 2024.
Part of the amendments which will be put to public referendum includes a proclamation of Russians’ faith in God and a ban on giving away any Russian territory, which is no doubt a message to the world on the current situation in Crimea, which voted to re-join Russia in 2014.
The plans for the constitutional amendments would also see some powers transferred from the President to the Duma, the Russian parliament.
