The chairperson of the National Sub-committee on Housing of the Local Government Management Association, Eugene Cummins, has said that the recent proposal of building up to 47,000 social housing units is achievable, but will take ‘a few years.’

He added that there would be particular emphasis on a housing assistance payment, acquisitions, and the return of vacant units to the housing stock over the lifetime of the plan.

The homelessness crisis has grown steadily worse over the last 24 months due to the Government’s lack of interest in doing anything to resolve it.

In a stark reminder of why this government must be ousted, the rate of homelessness among children in this country increased by an incredible 67% in June, when compared with the same time last year.

According to figure released, there were 2,206 children in homelessness last month, compared to 1,318 in June 2015.

At the same time, the number of adults in a homeless situation has increased by 27% since last year.
