RSA to eliminate loophole that allows learner drivers to avoid taking driving test

Those who repeatedly dodge taking their driving test could soon be punished under new proposals by the Road Safety Authority.

According to The Irish Mirror newspaper, the RSA are looking at new proposals to stop the current trend that sees current learner permit holders book their test but never take it.

It is believed the RSA have become increasingly frustrated by the trend as many permit holders are only booking their test only to renew their learner permit every two years.

Latest figures have revealed that there is a driving test waiting list of 55,000, but combined figures show that many drivers have deliberately repeatedly booked their test and never undertaken any.

The RSA say almost all drivers involved have had between 3 and 10 subsequent learner permit renewals without ever undertaking a driving test.

It is thought the new crackdown will coincide with new laws that will see vehicle owners punished for allowing those on learner permits to use their vehicle unaccompanied.
