RTE crime drama Kin gets the go ahead to film another series

Popular Irish crime show Kin has been greenlit for a fourth series.

Last summer it was reported how the cast and crew filmed seasons two and three back-to-back, building on the success of the first series.

And with an average of over 600,000 viewers tuning in every Sunday night and the show proving popular overseas in many countries, RTÉ has launched a fourth season, reports Independent.

Insiders say filming on the next episode will begin in September.

The drama is Irish TV’s biggest crime series since the hugely successful Love/Hate which ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2014. Kin was created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly.

The show chronicles the lives of the Kinsellas, a tight-knit crime family embroiled in a war against powerful drug kingpins, reports Independent.

The series has been sold to several foreign television stations, with AMC+ showing it in North America, Australia, Latin America and the United Kingdom.

Brendan “Bren” Kinsella, played by Francis Magee, became the protagonist of the second series.

He is first seen in a brief but explosive prison scene at the end of Season 1, then is released early from his sentence at the beginning of Season 2, much to the surprise of most of his family, and continues to wreak havoc, reports Independent.

The return of Bren, father of Michael and Jimmy and brother of Frank and Birdie, only reignites new disasters and traumas for all who have come out of it.

Kin continues Sundays at 9.30pm on RTÉ One
