Rural Independent TDs demand Finance Minister cut ‘enormous’ energy taxes

How can this unethical government continue to take 65% of every litre of petrol and diesel in tax, while people are forced to decide between buying food, fuel or heat?

The group has written to Finance Minister Paschal Donohue, seeking the elimination of all energy taxes until the end of 2022, to give people some overdue relief and shield from inflation.

Speaking from his Tipperary constituency today, the leader of the group, Deputy Mattie Mc Grath, stated:

“The ongoing energy price inflation is having a profound financial impact on every household, motorist, small business, farmer and transport operator. Thus far, any government intervention has proved meaningless, not even scratching the surface, as prices soar towards €2 per litre for petrol and diesel.”

“In fact, the biggest driver of skyrocketing fuel prices is the government’s ideological energy-policy choices. Continual excessive taxes, half-baked green policies, rampant inflation – not to mention the money-printing deficits – have made everything insanely expensive.”

“These mad policies mean Ireland is importing oil and gas from dirty dictators rather than relying on its own domestic production, together with increasing renewable energy supply chains.”

“Furthermore, and perhaps worst of all, the government’s crippling carbon tax (which was again hiked on May 1st) was specifically designed to make petrol, diesel, and all available energy products progressively expensive, with the government now collecting over 65% of the cost of every litre of fuel purchased at the pumps. Cutting these taxes, would see petrol and diesel slashed to below 80 cents per litre.”

“New Central Bank data demonstrates that great elevation in energy prices is the principal driver of Ireland’s consumer inflation. The data also confirms that inflation is higher for all rural residents and lower income and older households, precisely due to home energy, heating, and personal transport.”

“To date, the government has completely failed to take meaningful steps, within their control, to tackle inflation pressures. For over seven months, we have been calling for a dramatic reduction of all energy taxes. Failure by the government to take such action means everyone is being fleeced by legislated-induced energy taxes.”

“People simply need a break, which is why we have today requested the Finance Minister to take action and finally address the one issue that is causing the sky-high energy costs: government taxes.”

“We implore the Minister to make radical change, given the ongoing emergency and its drastic impact on the ordinary Irish citizen. It is callous, unjust, and cruel for the Minister to deliberately avoid taking action.”

“People need financial reprieve now. We feel that this is the very least the government can do for the Irish public, the body of individuals who elected the current leaders as their representatives and voice. We wonder how they sleep at night,” concluded Deputy Mc Grath.
