One of the few nations thought to be conducting espionage operations in Ireland is Russia, according to a senior Garda official, reports The Mirror.
The person in charge of the state security section, Assistant Commissioner Michael McElgunn, stated that certain states were engaging in “malign intent” espionage.
He claimed that in addition to attempting to steal secrets from businesses and the government, they also try to sow doubt about the legitimacy of the Irish government, reports The Mirror.
Mr McElgunn spoke to RTE’s This Week programme.
The Assistant Commissioner for Crime and Security Intelligence Service said: “What we are particularly concerned about is a handful of states who are involved in spying activities on sovereign soil with malign intent,” reports The Mirror.
“The intent to seek to influence, to create distrust in government, to support extremist groups within a state with that same end goal in mind. They will involve themselves in trying to steal secrets from the state, or steal secrets from industry within the state which undermines the reputation of a country,” he added, reports The Mirror.
