‘Super checkpoints’: Gardai launch campaign to tackle driving whilst hungover this Christmas

Gardaí have warned motorists not to drive whilst still feeling the effects from the night before.

The stark warning comes as Gardai confirmed that they will be stepping up their efforts to cut out drink driving over the festive period.

Under a new operation which will run in lead up and during the Christmas period, Gardai across the country will be setting up a high number of checkpoints both in the morning and evening time to tackle the ongoing issue.

Gardaí say two operations will be in effect with so called super checkpoints being setup to catch drink drivers.

It is understood one of the operations will focus on cities and towns, whilst the other will focus on rural roads leading to and from towns and cities across the country.

Launching their campaign this afternoon, Gardai say the checkpoints are being enforced as most accidents over the festive season occur between the hours of 7am and 11am.

Gardaí say the vast majority of these accidents occur due to the fact that motorists have been drinking heavily the night before.

They are also encouraging motorists to leave their vehicle at home whilst on a night out.
