Taoiseach set to announce new Tanaiste today

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has revealed that he will officially announce the country’s new Tanaiste later today.

Mr Varadkar who has been talking to a number of Fine Gael TD’s about the position since Tuesday following the resignation of Frances Fitzgerald confirmed the news earlier on Wednesday.

It is believed that the current Minister for Foreign Affairs and former party leader challenger Simon Coveney is the front runner for the position.

However it is pretty much an open contest as niether the Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe nor the Education Minister Richard Bruton have ruled themselves out of the running.

Meanwhile the Culture and Heritage Minister Heather Humphreys is also being considered to take on the role which was vacated by Ms Fitzgerald following her alleged involvement in the Maurice McCabe whistle-blower fiasco.

It is expected the appointment will be quick and who ever is chosen will be swiftly taken to Aras Ni Uachtarain to sign themselves into the position by this evening.
