The INTO Teachers conference heard from a gay atheist who claimed that “Teachers shouldn’t have to lie about who they are or what they believe, just to progress in our profession… Teaching is still a sea of Catholic white women, and as lovely a sea as that might be, a bit of diversity wouldn’t go astray.”

According to the Irish Examiner, Conor Bredin also claimed that gay and atheist primary school teachers in Ireland, who teach children between four and 11 years old, LGBTQ and atheist teachers “live in fear of being themselves in Catholic schools”.

Mr Bredin asked delegates at the conference to vote in favour of a motion to promote diversity and inclusion in schools (national / primary schools with children aged four to eleven).

He also asked the INTO delegates to help reverse the “learned behaviour” of homophobia and transphobia in schools, by teaching their pupils (aged 4-11) that it is wrong.

The INTO primary schools teachers Union passed his motion.
