Tensions rise in the Middle East after Iran shoots down an unarmed American drone

Tensions are set to rise further in the Middle East, after reports of the downing of an American drone by an Iranian weapon system.

There are conflicting reports over the exact location where the drone was shot down. American sources said that the machine was flying in international airspace, while an Iranian-run news outlet stated that the drone was actually inside the country’s borders.

The drone, an unarmed RQ-4 Global Hawk model, is used for surveillance and intelligence gathering.

The incident comes a day after US President Donald Trump authorized the deployment of 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East, amidst what he calls ‘hostile behavior’ by Iranian forces.
