The end of the world as we know it? Giant space rock barrels towards our planet

A 1km-wide global-killer asteroid is on course to buzz past Earth on April 19.

The rock, dubbed 2014 JO25, will do a fly-by on the date at a distance of about 1.8 million km, or 4.57 lunar distances.

The asteroid is a regular visitor around our sector of the galaxy. It will zoom past Earth again in 2091.

Despite the relatively safe distance, 2014 JO25 is categorized as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) because of its size, and the fact that its orbit takes it within 7,495,839km (about 4,658,000 miles), or 19.5 Lunar distances past our planet.

A large number of PHAs are spotted zooming across the visible Universe regularly, though none of these doomsday objects are on a direct collision course with Earth.
