The number of rape and domestic sexual abuse reports continues to rise, gardai say

The number of sexual offenses reported to the Gardaí continues to rise, according to statistics from the first half of 2022.

According to the Independent, new figures released by the Gardaí show a 23% increase in reported rape cases in the first six months of this year compared to 2021 and an 11% increase compared to 2019 before the pandemic.

Sex crime has been on the rise in Ireland since the start of 2015 and although it plateaued in 2020, this upward trend has continued over the past year.

There has also been a steady increase (13%) in domestic violence cases handled by Gardaí in the first half of 2022 compared to the first half of 2021.
