“The Quiet Man” cottage now shortlisted for ‘protected structure’ status

The famous cottage featured on ‘The Quiet Man’ has moved closer to receiving a ‘protected’ status.

The building is one of six structures that will be proposed to be added to the Record of Protected Structures (RPS) by Galway County Council on April 24.

The city’s council voted unanimously last October in favor of the cottage to be added to the RPS, after intense campaigning by activists from the White O’Morn Foundation and the Save the Quiet Man Cottage groups.

The list will go on public display for six weeks, and members of the public will be able to submit comments and suggestions during this time.

After that period elapses, the list will be handed over to the appropriate bodies, and the council will hold a final vote by July.

If the cottage is formally added to the RPS, it will be possible to enact legislation to prevent further decline to the site, which has steadily become almost ruinous due to lack of maintenance.
