The voice of an icon: Tributes pour in for legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne

Over the past 24 hours, tributes have poured in from around the world at this stage for Ireland’s best known broadcaster, Gay Byrne.

Described as the voice of an icon, Gaybo sadly died on Monday surrounded by his wife, two daughters and extended family.

According to RTE, the 85-yr-old’s family released the following statement:

“It is with sadness that Kathleen, Crona and Suzy wish to announce that their beloved Gay has died peacefully at home today, surrounded by his family.

“We wish to thank everybody for their love and support during Gay’s illness. Particularly the wonderful teams in the Mater Hospital, St Francis Hospice and the Irish Cancer Society”.

Gay’s death has been described as the end of era, especially for those who remember him on the Late Late Show and his antics on the Late Late Toy Show.
