There’s been a substantial increase in theft across the country, according to CSO figures

According to the latest crime figures from the CSO, there has been a significant increase in thefts in Ireland of up to 39%.

In the 12 months to the end of September, more than 62,000 thefts were recorded, more than 170 a day.

There were also significant increases in other categories, including attempted murder, assault, burglary and kidnapping and related crimes, but crimes related to organized crime, such as drugs and guns, fell

Fraud offenses are up 8% year-to-date but down 38% in the three months of last year.

The statistics are published on an accounting basis, which means that the CSO is not satisfied with the accuracy of the Garda Pulse data.

Commenting on the release, Jim Dalton, a statistician in the Crime and Criminal Justice Division, said the statistics show that “most categories of crime were up in the 12 months to September 2022 compared with a year earlier”, reports RTE.
