Thousands of European farmers—estimates ranging from 7,000 to 10,000—descended on Brussels with around 1,000 tractors, paralyzing the European Quarter during an EU leaders’ summit.
The core issue centred on the proposed EU-Mercosur free-trade agreement with South American nations, feared to inundate markets with cheaper beef, poultry, and sugar produced under laxer standards, undermining local producers. Additional concerns included potential cuts to agricultural subsidies, excessive regulations, and rising costs.
The demonstration escalated near the European Parliament, where protesters hurled potatoes, eggs, and fireworks, ignited tires and hay bonfires, and caused minor vandalism.
Police responded with water cannons and tear gas, leading to clashes amid thick smoke and debris-strewn streets.
In a direct response, the European Commission postponed the deal’s signing to January 2026, following opposition from France, Italy, and others demanding stronger farmer protections. While the protests dispersed by December 19, rural discontent across Europe persists.
